The Management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) has issued a stern reminder to all drivers and riders regarding the strict enforcement of traffic rules on the Demerara Harbour Bridge. The DHBC has observed an alarming increase in vehicles overtaking during the standard two-way traffic crossing, leading to safety concerns and an escalation in incidents on the bridge.

Violation of Rule No. 4 – Bridges’ Rules for Vehicular Traffic:
Drivers are explicitly reminded that overtaking, stopping, or unauthorized parking on the Demerara Harbour Bridge is a clear violation of Rule No. 4 of the Bridges’ Rules for Vehicular Traffic. The rule emphasizes that “No unauthorized stopping, parking, or overtaking of vehicles shall be allowed on the Bridge.”

Consequences for Non-Compliance:
The DHBC warns that failure to comply with traffic rules may result in severe consequences, including a ban from transiting the Demerara Harbour Bridge. To ensure the safety of all users, drivers and riders are urged to immediately cease the practice of overtaking and strictly adhere to speed limits and other established rules and regulations.

Key Traffic Rules and Regulations:

Speed Limit: The speed limit on the Demerara Harbour Bridge is set at 32 kilometers or 20 miles per hour.
Weight Limit: The maximum weight limit for normal crossings between 4 am and 10:30 pm is 18 tonnes, while special crossings between 10:30 pm and 3:30 am allow for a maximum weight of 24 tonnes.
Lane Discipline: Vehicles must observe lane discipline and refrain from overtaking during standard two-way traffic crossings.
Special Crossings: Special crossings for vehicles exceeding the lane width or weight limit are facilitated with prior permission from the Bridge Manager.
