Shooting Incident at Phillipai Under Police Investigation – Farmer Allegedly Injured During Hunting Trip
Authorities are actively investigating a shooting incident that transpired on Sunday, January 14, 2024, in Phillipai Village, Upper Mazaruni, resulting in the injury of Jeroam Tony, a 35-year-old farmer.
Darrick George, also 35, and a resident of Phillipai Village, is at the center of the inquiry. Preliminary information indicates that George, a licensed firearm holder with a 20-gauge shotgun, was engaged in hunting activities with Jeroam Tony when the incident occurred.
At approximately 14:00 hrs on the aforementioned Sunday, George armed himself with his licensed shotgun and accompanied Tony to his farm in Phillipai Village for a hunting expedition. During the hunting trip, George reported encountering a group of wild hogs and discharged several shots in their direction. Tragically, one of the pellets ricocheted, striking Jeroam Tony in the upper left chest, resulting in injury.
Upon returning home, Jeroam Tony applied homemade remedies to address the injury. However, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, he began experiencing increased pain in the affected area and started vomiting blood. Concerned about his deteriorating condition, Tony sought medical attention at the Phillipai Health Post.
Following an examination by a health worker, Jeroam Tony was promptly referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Yesterday, at approximately 16:00 hrs, the victim was transported from Phillipai to the Georgetown Public Hospital via private chartered aircraft.
In the wake of the incident, Darrick George was escorted to the Kamarang Police Station by the village Toshao, where an ongoing investigation is being conducted.
The authorities are diligently examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
