Arrest made after Counterfeit money was Successfully confiscated during a roadblock operation

Yesterday, police ranks executed a roadblock on Helena Public Road at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, resulting in a significant incident involving the discovery of suspected counterfeit currency. The operation unfolded when the ranks observed a vehicle with Registration Number PAB 5372 coming off the Mahaica bridge and turning north onto the Mahaica old road.

Upon noticing the suspicious behavior, a Police Corporal among the ranks pursued the vehicle, ultimately stopping and escorting it to the established roadblock. A search of the vehicle ensued, revealing a male passenger (age, correct name, and occupation currently unknown) seated alone in the front passenger seat. The passenger was asked to declare the contents of his pocket, leading to the discovery of a quantity of Guyana currency, consisting of five thousand dollar bills.

During the physical examination of the currency, suspected to be counterfeit, the individual suddenly fled into a nearby street, successfully evading the pursuing ranks. Despite their efforts, the suspect managed to escape.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Shiv Dalchand, a 31-year-old Taxi Driver from Enmore, East Coast Demerara, underwent a search which yielded nothing of evidential value. However, Dalchand was arrested and placed in custody pending further investigations, and the vehicle was impounded.

A subsequent count of the suspected forged currency amounted to $280,000, comprised of suspected counterfeit $5000 notes. Additionally, $13,000 in legitimate Guyana currency, consisting of $1000, $500, $100, and $20 notes, was recovered during the operation.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and assist in bringing the responsible parties to justice.
