New Road Commissioned at Arrowansa to Significantly Cut Travel Time for Residents

March 23, 2024 – Residents of Arrowansa in the Moruca sub-district of Barima-Waini (Region One) are celebrating the commissioning of a new $33.4 million road, which promises to transform their daily commute and access to essential services.

Hon. Collin Croal, Minister of Housing and Water and Parliamentary Representative of the region, led the commissioning ceremony alongside Mr. Brentnol Ashley, Regional Chairman, and Ms. Annansha Peters, Regional Vice-Chairperson. The event was attended by several officials, including Regional Executive Officer Mr. Sewchand and Deputy Regional Executive Officer Mr. Shem Cuffy.

The newly constructed road spans 9.5 kilometers by 6.1 meters and was funded through the regional budget. It involved comprehensive works such as grading, shaping, compacting, and the construction of drains. Previously, residents of Arrowansa, a satellite community of Manawarin, endured lengthy and hazardous journeys through creeks lasting over an hour and a half to reach central Manawarin. During the dry season, travel became even more challenging, with some relying on tractors, resulting in journeys of over two hours.

Minister Croal highlighted the significant impact of the new road, stating that residents can now access the main junction area in just ten minutes, drastically reducing travel time and facilitating easier access to goods and services. He emphasized that the road project fulfills commitments made by the Dr. Irfaan Ali-led Administration ahead of the 2020 elections. Additionally, Minister Croal announced plans for the drilling of a new well to further improve community infrastructure.

Mr. Brentnol Ashley, the Regional Chairman, emphasized the broader economic benefits of the road, which are expected to stimulate new opportunities, particularly in agriculture. The government’s commitment to ensuring food security remains steadfast, with infrastructure development playing a crucial role in achieving this goal.

The commissioning of the new road marks a significant milestone for the residents of Arrowansa, promising improved connectivity, safety, and economic growth for the community and its surrounding areas.
