Today marked a momentous occasion for four low-income households as they received keys to their new homes, valued at $5 million each, as part of the Government of Guyana and Inter-American Development Bank’s Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme.

Among the elated beneficiaries was 83-year-old Ms. Jennifer Klass, who expressed her joy at finally owning her own home after years of living with relatives following a devastating fire that left her with nothing.

Ms. Klass, along with Ms. Shabina Haniff, Mr. Egland Campbell, and Mr. Nigel Ralph, received the keys from Housing and Water Minister, the Hon. Collin Croal, during a ceremony at the site of their new homes. For Ms. Klass, this home signifies a place of comfort and security after facing adversity.

Mr. Campbell also praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of allowing the process to work and expressing satisfaction with the outcome.

Minister Croal congratulated the new homeowners and urged them to make the best of their new residences. He highlighted the significance of the Core Home initiative, noting that despite challenges, the program is back on track to deliver a total of 323 homes to vulnerable families. Minister Croal also announced an increase in the Home Improvement Subsidy from $500,000.00 to $750,000.00, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving housing accessibility.

Additionally, Minister Croal provided updates on the progress of the program, revealing that 71 beneficiaries have been selected from villages within the project boundary on the East Coast of Demerara. Currently, four homes have been handed over, four are occupied, fifteen are under construction, and another 48 are in the procurement stage.

The event was captured in photos by Sydel Thomas of the Central Housing & Planning Authority PR Department, showcasing the smiles and gratitude of the new homeowners as they embark on this new chapter in their lives.
