In the early hours of Friday, January 5th, 2024, a tragic fire incident occurred at Lot G 1 1/3 Plantain Walk, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, resulting in the unfortunate demise of a Venezuelan national. The Guyana Fire Service is actively investigating the incident.

At 3:31 a. m. , firefighters from the La Grange Fire Station, along with a water tender and a water carrier, responded swiftly to a distress call reporting a building on fire. Upon arrival, they discovered a two-storey house engulfed in flames, specifically the first floor.

The house, owned by 68-year-old Bernadette Gordon, was occupied by 27-year-old Canaan Bacchus. Regrettably, 47-year-old Venezuelan national Richard José perished in the fire. At the time of the incident, it was unknown that José was inside the building.

The first floor of the structure was completely destroyed, and nearby houses, located at Lot G 11/3 Plantain Walk and Lot H 11 Plantain Walk, suffered damages due to radiated heat. A Toyota Premio (PYY3553) parked nearby had its rear lights destroyed due to the intense heat.

Firefighters deployed three jets, utilizing water from tender #111 and water carrier #14, along with a jet from Light Pump #118 via an open water source to extinguish the flames. Despite their efforts, Richard José could not be saved.

The Guyana Fire Service extends condolences to the family and friends of Richard José. Fire prevention officers are diligently investigating the incident to determine the cause of the tragic blaze.
