Enhanced Security Measures Implemented To Curb Contraband In Prisons
In response to the persistent issue of contraband being smuggled into prisons, Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, announced on Sunday the implementation of additional security measures within prison facilities. The move aims to curb the flow of illegal items and enhance public safety.
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented To Curb Contraband In Prisons
Mr. Elliot highlighted recent attempts by individuals to introduce contraband by throwing items over prison fences or placing them in proximity to the facilities. To address this, the Prison Head stated that strict security protocols would be enforced, restricting the movement of individuals near prison locations. Additionally, “Stop and Search” exercises will be conducted when necessary.
The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) plans to erect warning signs at strategic points outside the prisons, informing the public of the legal consequences associated with attempting to introduce contraband into the facilities.
Director Elliot emphasized a commitment to tackling corruption within the prison system, targeting not only corrupt officers but also individuals, including family members and friends of inmates, who are complicit in breaking the law.
“Public safety is a key component of the prison system, and all efforts will be made to achieve such a task,” stated the Prison Head. The enhanced security measures aim to create a secure environment within the prisons while discouraging any attempts to compromise the safety and integrity of the facilities.
The Guyana Prison Service remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law, ensuring the safety of both inmates and the public, and preventing the illicit introduction of contraband.
