In commemoration of World Water Day, students from Berbice High and Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary schools embarked on an enlightening visit to the Sheet Anchor Water Treatment Plant (WTP) today, marking the initiation of a week-long series of activities aimed at promoting awareness about water conservation and management.

World Water Day, globally observed on March 22nd, serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of freshwater and the imperative of sustainable water resource management. This year’s theme, “Leveraging Water for Peace,” underscores the indispensable role of water in our lives while encouraging individuals and communities to recognize its intrinsic value.

The excursion to the Sheet Anchor WTP afforded students a valuable opportunity to acquire firsthand knowledge about the water treatment process and the dedicated efforts undertaken to ensure the provision of clean and safe drinking water to communities in the region. Accompanied by their educators and water management experts, the students were led on an informative tour of the facility, where they witnessed the various stages of water treatment and familiarized themselves with the cutting-edge technologies employed.

The array of activities planned for World Water Day aims to actively involve students, teachers, and the broader community in comprehending the significance of water conservation and embracing sustainable practices.

“We are excited to launch World Water Day week with this visit to the Sheet Anchor WTP,” expressed a student from Berbice High. “It’s vital for us as students to grasp the importance of water and recognize the role we can play in conserving and safeguarding it. This experience will undoubtedly inspire us to become advocates and ambassadors for water conservation.”

The visit to the Sheet Anchor WTP was made possible through the collaborative endeavors of the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), demonstrating a concerted commitment to fostering environmental awareness and instilling a culture of responsible water usage among the youth and the wider community.
