As March 2024 concluded, Guyana witnessed a troubling surge in road fatalities, with 13 individuals losing their lives in motor vehicle accidents and incidents. This marks a significant increase from the 9 road deaths reported in February 2024, bringing the total fatalities for the year to 44.

Data compiled by the Guyana Police Force revealed that between January 1 and August 28, 2023, a total of 109 lives were tragically lost in 91 accidents. The majority of these fatal incidents occurred during the nighttime hours, underscoring the heightened risks associated with driving after dark.

Speeding and drunk driving were cited as primary contributors to the spike in road deaths, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. President Irfaan Ali addressed this concern in his New Year’s message to the nation, pledging to implement new laws, regulations, measures, and technology to curb the alarming rate of road accidents.

Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, echoed these sentiments, expressing the government’s deep concern over the escalating number of deaths caused by road accidents. Minister Benn emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to address reckless driving behaviors, including speeding, drunk driving, and distracted driving.
