Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has announced his candidacy for a second re-election, aiming to secure another six-year term in the upcoming voting scheduled for July 28. The ruling Socialist party made the announcement, with Vice President Diosdado Cabello proclaiming Maduro as the party’s candidate during a gathering at a large sports arena.

Maduro, a former union leader aged 61, addressed his supporters, expressing confidence in securing victory in the upcoming elections. Despite recent polls showing Maduro lagging behind opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado, who garnered significant support, Maduro remained steadfast in his determination to win.

However, Machado’s appearance on the ballot remains uncertain after a court upheld a ban barring her from holding public office, despite her victory in an opposition primary. The opposition faces pressure to name a replacement for Machado before the March 25 registration deadline.

The United States, which previously eased sanctions on Venezuela’s government as part of an elections deal with the opposition, has signaled a reinstatement of oil sanctions amid the recent developments. Maduro’s popularity has reportedly waned among his base, leading to a reversal in policy.

Since Maduro assumed power in 2013 following the death of his mentor, President Hugo Chavez, Venezuela has grappled with hyperinflation and an unprecedented economic collapse. The country has witnessed sporadic waves of protests against Maduro’s government, resulting in arrests and casualties.

While the main opposition parties boycotted the 2018 presidential election, refusing to recognize Maduro’s victory, the upcoming election is poised to be a significant event in determining Venezuela’s political future.
