Tragic Incident Claims Life of Young Girl in Lauderdale by the SeaFlorida

A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Tuesday at a beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, resulting in the death of a young girl and hospitalization of her brother after they fell into a hole they had dug in the sand. Sloan Mattingly, aged 7, and Maddox Mattingly, aged 9, were pulled from the sand and rushed to the hospital, but tragically, Sloan did not survive.

“Our hearts are heavy in LBTS today after learning two children were trapped in the sand,” expressed the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea in a statement following the devastating event.

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the children, along with their parents who were on vacation from Indiana, were involved in digging a hole in the sand when the incident occurred. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

First responders received a distress call about the trapped children at approximately 3 p.m. Eyewitnesses shared video footage showing the frantic efforts of rescuers as they worked to free one of the children from the sand.

A witness recounted the harrowing scene, describing the desperate attempts of adults to dig out the trapped children. Despite efforts to save them, Sloan remained trapped beneath the sand until she was finally freed, but unfortunately, it was too late.

Lafayette Meadows School in Indiana, where Sloan and Maddox attend, released a statement mourning the loss of Sloan, describing her as a “bright, sweet, loving 1st-grade student.” The school expressed solidarity with the Mattingly family during this difficult time and requested privacy for the grieving family.

As the community mourns the loss of Sloan Mattingly, thoughts and prayers are extended to her family and loved ones during this incredibly challenging time.
