A devastating fire engulfed the home of Moses Elias, a 77-year-old former headmaster of the Bladen Hall Multilateral School, in Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Friday morning, resulting in his tragic demise. Elias, a resident of Quamina Road, Beterverwagting, lived alone in the two-storey structure that was consumed by flames during the early hours of Friday.
Residents in the vicinity reported hearing loud explosions and screams emanating from Elias’ house, prompting immediate efforts to rescue him. Despite their courageous attempts, Elias could not be located amidst the chaos. Tragically, it is believed that he was trapped inside the heavily fortified residence.
The Guyana Fire Service was promptly alerted, and after a two-hour operation, Elias’ charred remains were recovered from the debris. He was burnt beyond recognition, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Sherwyn Elias, Moses Elias’ nephew, expressed profound sadness at the loss, recalling how his uncle often preferred solitude and would isolate himself from family members. “Sometime when you come, he would be in the house and you would call and he would not answer,” Sherwyn lamented, emphasizing the profound impact of the tragedy.
A neighbour, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted waking up to the distressing sounds of explosions and screams emanating from Elias’ residence. “About two hours after, they pulled his body out of the house…from the kitchen area,” she recounted, highlighting the harrowing nature of the incident.
Investigators from the Guyana Fire Service have launched a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire, as the community grapples with the loss of a respected educator and beloved community member.
