Jonathan Gomes, a 27-year-old resident of Tucville, Georgetown, died Thursday night after crashing into a motor lorry along the Columbia Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Police Headquarters reported that Gomes was driving a motorcar (#PVV 3618) west along the southern side of the road at a fate rate. He overtook several vehicles proceeding in the same direction at a right bend in the road but soon ended up in the path of a motor lorry (GSS 6980).
The lorry, driven by Odit Ramdeen, was driving in its designated lane in the opposite direction. Because he was overtaking other vehicles, Gomes drove in the lorry’s lane.
Police said Ramdeen attempted to drive in the corner to avoid a collision but the lorry and the car nevertheless collided. The car crashed into the front portion of the lorry, and the lorry then collided with a utility pole.
Due to this collision, Gomes received injuries about his body and was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens, placed into force vehicle along with Ramdeen and taken to Mahaicony Public Hospital.
Both men were examined by a doctor on duty; Gomes was pronounced dead.
The driver of the motor lorry was treated and sent away. A breathalyser test was later conducted on Ramdeen but there was no trace of alcohol detected. He is presently in custody, assisting with investigation.
Meanwhile, Gomes’ body is at the Bailey’s Funeral parlour, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigation in progress.
