The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has officially announced that its eagerly anticipated Delegates’ Congress is scheduled to take place in the first week of May. The announcement was made by PPP General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, during a briefing at Freedom House on Thursday. The decision was reached following a meeting of the Party’s Executive Committee last Saturday.
The Delegates’ Congress, a significant event on the PPP’s calendar, is set to convene in May to elect a new 32-member Central Committee. The last Congress was held in December 2016 in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), under the theme “Strengthen the Party, Defend Democracy, Onward to Victory.”
Dr. Jagdeo also addressed his future as General Secretary, stating, “It would be presumptuous of me to say I will continue as General Secretary. I’ll decide whether I’ll contest, but right now, I am General Secretary until those elections are held.”
The PPP, led by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, returned to office in August 2020 after winning the 2020 elections. According to the party’s constitution, the Delegates’ Congress is due every three years.
Dr. Jagdeo acknowledged that factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic had contributed to the delays in hosting the party’s congress last year. The upcoming Congress is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future strategies and leadership.
