Junior Da Silva, a 32-year-old man of Lot 23 Hadfield Street, Georgetown, was remanded to prison on Wednesday by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Da Silva, who is wanted in Brazil for aggravated theft, appeared for an extradition case hearing.
The Government of Guyana (GoG) initiated the extradition proceedings against Da Silva following an Interpol red notice from Brazil, indicating his wanted status for aggravated theft, which involves using a weapon during theft.
Da Silva, a dual citizen of Guyana and Brazil, was represented by Attorney-at-Law Siand Dhurjon. Dhurjon argued for his client’s release, citing that Da Silva had been in custody for over 72 hours and had attended court in Brazil virtually on February 28, 2024. However, Dhurjon expressed that Da Silva’s extradition case in Guyana hindered his ability to physically appear in court in Brazil.
Despite Dhurjon’s plea for bail, Police Legal Advisor, Attorney-at-Law Mandel Moore, objected based on Section 15 (3) of the Criminal Offence Act, which allows for a probation arrest warrant to be issued, enabling the court to detain the defendant for up to 30 days.
Prosecutor Moore further contested Dhurjon’s claim about Da Silva’s court attendance in Brazil, stating that the documents provided by Dhurjon indicated Da Silva’s absence from court.

Considering the arguments presented, Magistrate Latchman remanded Da Silva to prison. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 12, 2024, pending further proceedings in his extradition case.
