Late-Night Fire Leaves Linden Resident Homeless

A devastating late-night fire in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), on Saturday has left one person homeless after destroying a house.

The property, located at lot 63 Ariwa Oval, Retrieve, MacKenzie, Linden, was owned by the late Deryl Joseph and occupied by 77-year-old Douglas Joseph.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received a distress call around 10:36 PM on Saturday, alerting them to the blaze. Responding swiftly, Water Bowser #12 and four firefighters were dispatched, arriving at the scene by 10:45 PM.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a grim sight: a two-storey concrete structure with corrugated metal sheeting fully engulfed in flames. Despite their immediate efforts, the fire had already taken a significant hold.

Firefighters wasted no time and deployed their equipment, with the first jet of water being released by 10:46 PM. However, despite their efforts, the fire caused irreparable damage, resulting in the complete destruction of the building and all its contents.

Tragically, the blaze has left Douglas Joseph, the lone occupant of the house, homeless.

Preliminary investigations by the GFS suggest that the fire may have been the result of malicious intent by unknown individuals. As such, the incident remains under investigation, with Fire Prevention officials collaborating with the Police to ascertain the cause of the fire.
