A family in Postal Street, Stevedore Housing Scheme, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, has been left homeless and bereft of personal belongings following a devastating fire that engulfed their home on Friday night.

Judy Lynch, her husband, her 29-year-old son Andrew Marks, her daughter-in-law, and her grandfather are currently seeking refuge at a relative’s home in the aftermath of the blaze.

Andrew Marks recounted the harrowing events, stating that he received news of the fire while he was away around 6:00 PM on Friday. Rushing home upon hearing the alarming news, he found the house already consumed by flames. Despite his efforts to salvage belongings, the intensity of the fire thwarted any meaningful rescue attempts.

The family, who had resided in the property for over 30 years, has lost everything – including millions of dollars worth of possessions. Marks explained that they had recently rebuilt the house, converting it into a single-storey, four-bedroom concrete structure. However, all their efforts were reduced to ashes in the inferno.

Regrettably, the house was uninsured, compounding the family’s plight. Marks suspects an electrical fault as the cause of the fire, citing frequent power outages as a recurring issue in the area.

With the family facing the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch, Marks expressed his concerns about the challenges ahead. Having lost his livelihood due to road construction work, he now shoulders the responsibility of providing for his family.
