Investigation Launched into Alleged Shooting Incident Involving Special Branch Ranks” The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has initiated an investigation into an alleged shooting incident that occurred at Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, involving ranks from the Special Branch.
The incident, which took place on Monday night (March 11), reportedly targeted Sergeant 20409 Ronald Payne of Providence Police Station. According to reports, the Special Branch ranks, comprising a Sergeant, a Corporal, a Lance Corporal, and two Constables, were assisting Regional Division #3 ranks in an investigation related to an alleged robbery/murder.
They were searching for a dark-colored Toyota Rumion car believed to have been used by the suspects as a getaway vehicle. Sergeant Payne, unaware of the Special Branch operatives’ presence, was driving home from work in his own dark-colored Toyota Rumion around 22:10 hrs when he was stopped by the ranks. In a frightening turn of events, the ranks opened fire in the air and ordered him to stop. Responding to the perceived threat, Sergeant Payne promptly drove to the Providence Police Station seeking refuge. Subsequently, the Special Branch ranks involved in the incident also arrived at the Providence Police Station and were placed under closed arrest.
Their firearms were confiscated, and crime scene technicians recovered several spent shells from the scene. Currently, the Police Ballistics Department is examining both the shells and firearms. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or property damage during the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, questions arise regarding the circumstances surrounding the mistaken identity and the actions taken by the Special Branch ranks. The OPR’s inquiry aims to uncover the facts and ensure accountability for any wrongdoing.
