A native of The Netherlands, Justice Wit was a highly regarded Jurist with extensive expertise in various legal domains. His proficiency spanned private law, commercial and admiralty law, insurance, bankruptcy and insolvency, company law, intellectual property, criminal law, military law, administrative law, constitutional law, and international human rights law, as highlighted by the CCJ.
Before joining the CCJ, Justice Wit adjudicated cases in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, and the Dutch Windward Islands of Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.
The CCJ acknowledged Justice Wit’s linguistic versatility, describing him as a polyglot. He will be remembered not only for his legal acumen but also for his wit both inside and outside the courtroom.
Justice Adrian Saunders, President of the CCJ, expressed deep sadness, reflecting on their collaboration since 2005 as part of the inaugural Bench of the Court. Justice Wit, as the lone Civil Law Judge on the current bench, contributed rich experience in military law, administrative law, constitutional law, and international human rights law.
In addition to his judicial duties, Justice Wit played a significant role in the CCJ Academy for Law.
In Guyana, Justice Wit’s legacy includes presiding over numerous prominent cases, such as the Third-Term case and the Constitutional cases following the 2018 no-confidence vote against the Guyana Government.
The CCJ extends its condolences to Justice Wit’s family, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging the profound loss experienced by the Court and the legal community. The memory of Justice Jacob Wit’s contributions will endure in the annals of Caribbean legal history. May he rest in peace.
