President Irfaan Ali announced on Friday the government’s readiness to tackle the backlog of cases in the public health sector by potentially bringing in additional doctors if needed. Addressing hundreds of doctors from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and regional health sector representatives at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, President Ali emphasized the importance of addressing backlogs, especially those affecting women and children.
He assured that the government is committed to investing in clearing the identified backlogs, urging healthcare workers to identify areas where specialized help may be required to alleviate the workload.
While the President did not explicitly mention a proposed hiring scheme to bring in healthcare workers from Bangladesh and other countries, he emphasized the need for highly qualified healthcare workers, particularly with the construction of six regional “state-of-the-art” hospitals across various regions of Guyana.
Acknowledging the current shortage of healthcare workers in the country, President Ali highlighted the importance of finding short and medium-term solutions while simultaneously investing in training to meet future requirements. He emphasized the need for structured planning and targeted solutions, involving all stakeholders in decision-making processes.
In addition to addressing staffing shortages, President Ali mentioned collaborations with institutions like the University of West Indies’ School of Medicine and potential partnerships with countries like India and China to bolster medical education and training in Guyana.
He also expressed hopes for doctors to contribute to Guyana’s nursing program, adding value and building local talent in the healthcare sector.
