In a remarkable display of community dedication and philanthropy, Joe Jagmohan, the proprietor of International Imports and Supplies, has invested a substantial $30 million to convert five acres of rice fields into a vibrant community centre ground in Hampton Court, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). This transformative project stands as a tribute to his late mother, Chano Jagmohan, and seeks to address the dearth of recreational facilities for youths in the area.
Reflecting on his childhood memories of playing cricket and other sports in the community, Jagmohan recognized the need for accessible recreational spaces, especially following the sale of land by the Sankar family. Motivated by a desire to fill this void, he envisioned the community ground as a cultural and sporting hub, open to all residents regardless of religious affiliations, to promote ongoing community engagement.
Praising Jagmohan’s dedication, Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, acknowledged the significant effort required to establish such facilities and encouraged users to maintain diligent upkeep. Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva echoed these sentiments, commending Jagmohan and his team for their proactive approach to enhancing community recreation.
The inauguration of the ground was marked by a spirited softball cricket tournament, drawing participation from 14 teams vying for $1.4 million in cash and other prizes. Exceptional players were recognized for their contributions, and teams were presented with unique gifts, including ram sheep, fostering a sense of camaraderie among attendees.
The establishment of the community centre ground stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and underscores the importance of fostering inclusive spaces for recreation and social interaction.
