A tragic incident unfolded in the remote mining community of South Rupuniuni, Quarries Village, Region #9, as reports emerged of an alleged murder occurring on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The victim, identified only as ‘Frankie,’ a Venezuelan national, reportedly fell victim to a fatal assault by a fellow miner, Cane Vincent, aged 24.
According to initial investigations, both the deceased and the suspect were employed by Reneeta Andrews, a miner operating in the area. The incident took place at Paiyuka Falls, along the Puruni River, during the early hours of the morning.
Details revealed that at approximately 03:20 hrs, Vincent was socializing with coworkers in a hammock, where he later drifted into sleep after consuming alcohol. Allegedly, ‘Frankie’ purportedly struck Vincent while he slept, rousing him from slumber. In a fit of anger, Vincent armed himself with a knife and proceeded to ‘Frankie’s’ hammock, inflicting four stab wounds to his back.
In a desperate attempt to seek refuge, ‘Frankie’ fled to the quarters of their employer, where they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
Upon receipt of the distressing report, law enforcement authorities swiftly responded to the scene. The lifeless body of ‘Frankie’ was discovered lying face down on a mattress, attired in brown 3/4 pants. Medical examination revealed four stab wounds, two to the upper back and two to the midsection.
The crime scene was meticulously documented and processed by forensic experts, resulting in the recovery of the murder weapon. The body of the deceased is currently en route to Bartica Regional Hospital for further examination.
