Bibi Fareena Joseph, called Christine, a 33-year-old housewife of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was on Thursday charged with the attempted murder of her nine-year-old daughter.

She appeared (virtually) at the Leonora Magistrate Court before Magistrate Faith McGusty, where the indictable charge was read to her.

She was not required to plea and was remanded to prison. The case was postponed to 2024-08-02 for report.

The incident unfolded around 22:00 hrs two Sundays ago at Zeelugt, East Bank Demerara.

According to the police report, the young girl lived with her mother and stepfather.

Reports are that the mother and stepfather got into an argument, during which the stepfather hurled remarks at the mother and her daughter and asked them to leave the house.

The mother then related to the child that her biological father was dead and that her stepfather did not want them. The mother proceeded to chop her daughter on her left arm but the child managed to escape.

She was rescued by a neighbour who took her to Leonora Cottage Hospital.

The child was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient.

When police visited the home, the mother was seen with a chop wound to her left arm and related that she inflicted the wound on herself.

She was arrested and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital for treatment.

After being discharged, she was placed into custody at the Leonora Police Station.
