WORLD T20: Ruthless England, clinical Bangladesh keep Super Eight hopes alive

  • by

England thrashed Oman in a woefully one-sided affair and Bangladesh toppled Netherlands as they both kept their hopes of securing Super Eight spots in the ICC Men’s World T20 alive.

SUMMARY: England 50-2 from 3.1 overs (Buttler 24*) beat Oman 47 all out from 13.2 overs (Rashid 4-11, Archer 3-12, Wood 3-12) by eight wickets with 101 balls to spare

A ruthlessly efficient England gave their hopes of progressing in the T20 World Cup a major boost with an emphatic thrashing of Oman in Antigua.

The defending champions, who would have been knocked out by defeat, dismissed Oman for only 47 and raced to their target in just 3.1 overs in one of the most one-sided matches seen at a World Cup.

It significantly improves their net run-rate and means they will qualify for the Super 8s if they beat Namibia on Saturday and Scotland lose to Australia later that day.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood tore through the Oman line-up with their pace while Adil Rashid bamboozled with his leg-spin for 4-12.

Rashid, like Archer, took a wicket in his first over, while Wood managed two. England’s two quicks both claimed 3-12.

Phil Salt hit the first two balls of the chase for six before being bowled, while Will Jacks fell swinging in the second over as England chased a rapid victory.

Captain Jos Buttler pressed on to finish 24 not out from eight balls and complete the quickest run chase in T20 World Cup history which ignites his side’s campaign.

SUMMARY: Bangladesh 159-5 from 20 overs (Shakib 64*, Tanzid 35, Van Meekeren 2-15, Dutt 2-17) beat Netherlands 134-8 from 20 overs (Engelbrecht 33, Vikramjit 26, Rishad 3-33, Taskin 2-30, Mustafizur 1-12) by 25 runs

Bangladesh took a big step towards qualification for the T20 World Cup Super Eight as they beat the Netherlands by 25 runs in St Vincent.

Shakib Al Hasan struck an unbeaten 64 from 46 balls to guide his side to 159, rebuilding the innings after they lost two early wickets to the bowling of Aryan Dutt.

In reply, the Dutch initially kept up with the required run-rate, with Vikram Singh hitting three sixes in a spirited 26 before being stumped by Litton Das.

Young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain then took the wickets of Sybrand Engelbrecht and Bas de Leede in the 15th over to stall the chase at 111-5, with the Netherlands making just 23 runs from the final five overs.

The win sees Bangladesh move two points clear of their opponents in Group D, knowing a win against Nepal on Monday (01:30 BST) will definitely secure their place in the second round.

The Dutch must hope that Bangladesh lose that fixture, and that they can win and achieve a big run-rate swing against bottom-placed Sri Lanka.
