Guyana secured a vital 3-1 victory over Belize in their Group D World Cup Qualifier match at Wildey Turf in Bridgetown, Barbados.
This win marks their first triumph in the second round of qualifiers and propels them into third place in the group.
The deadlock was broken in the 66th minute by Deon Moore, who expertly finished a pass from Omari Glasgow.
Just a minute later, Liam Gordon doubled Guyana’s lead with a powerful left-footed shot after a dazzling run that bypassed Belizean defenders.
Deon Moore wasn’t done yet. He completed his brace in the 71st minute, redirecting a pass from Nathan Moriah-Welsh with a clever flick inside the box.
Belize threatened a comeback with a late goal from Carlos Bernardez in the 88th minute. Bernardez connected with a Jahryl Smith cross to head the ball past the Guyanese goalkeeper.
However, Guyana held on to secure a crucial three points. They now sit behind group leaders Nicaragua and Panama, who are both tied on six points.
Their World Cup qualifying journey continues with upcoming fixtures against tougher opponents – Nicaragua, ranked 16th by CONCACAF, and Montserrat, ranked 23rd.
Guyana is currently ranked 19th in CONCACAF.
Guyana will face Nicaragua on June 6th, 2025, followed by a clash with Montserrat on June 10th.
Only the top two teams from each group will progress to the third and final round of qualifiers.
This final stage will see twelve teams battling it out in three groups of four.
Each group will play a double round-robin format, with the winners securing a coveted spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two runners-up with the highest rankings will have a chance to fight for a World Cup berth through inter-confederation playoffs.
