Vice President Jagdeo Clarifies Remarks, Criticizes Media Mischaracterization

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has addressed what he perceives as misrepresentation by certain media outlets regarding his recent speech at Babu Jaan, Region Six, honoring the party’s founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan.

In a press conference at the Office of the President, Dr. Jagdeo clarified that his remarks were not directed at individuals challenging the party’s track record but rather at those spreading misinformation about government policies and initiatives.

Asserting Guyana’s status as a free country where anyone is welcome to contest elections, Dr. Jagdeo reminded that it was the PPP/C Administration that championed the freedom for people to contest elections.

He emphasized that criticism is a part of the political landscape but urged against thin-skinned reactions, stating, “You can’t be thin-skinned when you get criticized too. ” Expressing concern about the highly politicized media environment, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the media’s political objectives, reaffirming the government’s commitment to engagement despite challenges.

Previously, Dr. Jagdeo lamented the prevalence of lies and misinformation in public discourse, noting the hindrance it poses to addressing critical policy issues and social welfare.
