Vagrant dies in early morning accident

An accident on the Vreed-en-Hoop Public Road, West Coast Demerara during the early hours of Saturday morning resulted in the death of 50-year-old Barrat Persaud.

Police said Persaud had no fixed place of abode.

An investigation has been launched into the accident which occurred around 01:30 hrs.

In a statement, Police Headquarters said motorcar HD 3236 was heading west along the road when the driver alleged that Persaud. who was standing on the southern edge of the road, suddenly walked into the path of his vehicle.

As a result, Police said the driver claimed that the left side of the car collided with Persaud.

Persaud then fell onto the road surface where he received injuries to his head and about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited persons and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, 45-year-old Jermaine Wallerson, was arrested.

Police said a breathalyser test was conducted and no trace of alcohol was detected.

Persaud’s body is presently at Ezekiel Funeral home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
