A 42-year-old truck driver, Deodat Ramanand, hailing from Good Hope Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He faced a charge of causing the death of Temeca Kerr due to dangerous driving and was granted bail in the sum of $1 million.
During his first court appearance, Ramanand was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge. The incident leading to the charge occurred on February 15, 2024, at the junction of Camp Street and Brickdam.
According to the facts presented in court, Ramanand was driving motor lorry # GMM 9622 east along the northern drive lane of Brickdam at a high speed, despite the traffic light signal flashing red in his direction. Simultaneously, motorcar PWW 7944, driven by Kerr, was proceeding north along the western drive lane of Camp Street, with a traffic light signal flashing amber in her direction.
Both drivers failed to adhere to the traffic light signals, resulting in a collision between their vehicles. Kerr, along with three occupants of her vehicle, sustained injuries and were hospitalized. Tragically, Kerr succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment on March 23, 2024, at about 1:30hrs.
