In a distressing turn of events today, November 27, 2023, an electrical fire erupted on the east southern side of the Skeldon Municipal Market in Corriverton, Berbice, causing significant damage to the premises. The incident occurred at approximately 06:45 hrs, leading to a rapid response from firefighting units.
Upon receiving the distress call, Fire Tender No.101 from Corriverton and Fire Tender 110 from Rose Hall, led by Station Officer Minty and four other ranks, promptly arrived at the scene. Their swift and coordinated efforts successfully contained and extinguished the fire, preventing further escalation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from an electric fan left plugged into the wall of one of the stalls and switched on. The overheating of the fan led to the ignition of nearby flammable materials, sparking the unfortunate incident.
While the Guyana Fire Service managed to bring the flames under control, the aftermath reveals the destruction of two stalls and damage to several others within the municipal market. The precise extent of the damage is yet to be fully determined.
Authorities are actively engaged in ongoing investigations to comprehensively understand the incident’s causes and effects. The focus is on implementing measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, emphasizing the importance of electrical safety within public spaces.
The resilience and quick response of the firefighting units played a crucial role in mitigating the damage, underscoring the importance of well-prepared emergency services in safeguarding community assets.
