Guyana Defence Force (GDF) private Azim Khan, who was shot and injured during a home invasion earlier this month, has regained consciousness and is showing signs of improvement.
“By the grace of God he go come through safe but slowly and surely,” Khan’s mother, Bibi Fazeela Ali told the News Room on Tuesday.
Khan was shot to the chest during the incident which occurred around 00:45hrs on May 5 at Block 8, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
The incident left Khan clinging for his life.
He is a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and was on life support machine.
After being unresponsive for weeks, Khan regained consciousness late last week.
“He come off the life machine but he still deh in the ICU…so he coming around slowly,” Ali said.
Khan has not spoken about the incident to his family.
Khan and some of his relatives were hanging out in the kitchen area of the house.
While seated, Khan noticed two masked men entering the house through the front door which was open.
Khan confronted the bandits and a scuffle ensued. One of the men whipped out a firearm and discharged two rounds, one of which struck Khan.
Khan had a quantity of cash in his possession. The cash, along with a gold chain he was wearing and his cellular phone, were stolen. The bandits then escaped on foot.
Two men, Terry Thomas and Dexter McDonald called “Labba” were subsequently charged and remanded to prison for attempted murder of Khan.
While Khan remains hospitalised and his family is hopeful that he will return home soon, they continue to live in fear.
