On the afternoon of June 16, Jason Kelley was challenged by the security guard as he attempted to flee from a West Bridgford supermarket with two bottles of spirits. In his desperate escape attempt, Kelley brandished a screwdriver and used it to strike out at the security guard while grappling with him. After the altercation, Kelley fled the scene on Bridgford Road. He was later identified through CCTV footage and subsequently arrested.

The victim, a security warden employed by the local council, thankfully suffered only minor injuries in the incident. Kelley later pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession of a bladed article in a public place, theft, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and assault by beating.

The presiding judge at Nottingham Crown Court issued a 14-month jail sentence to Kelley. PC Mathew Holden of Nottinghamshire Police commended the security guard for his bravery and emphasized that violence during shoplifting incidents would not be tolerated. The verdict serves as a warning to potential shoplifters about the consequences of such actions.
