In a recent health scare, dozens of individuals across 15 states have fallen ill due to salmonella contamination traced back to cantaloupes that are now part of a widespread recall, as reported by U.S. health officials. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed on Friday that at least 43 people in these states have been affected, with 17 of them requiring hospitalization.
The outbreak has prompted the recall of several brands of both whole and pre-cut cantaloupes, as well as pre-cut fruit, within the last week. Notable among these are Malichita brand whole cantaloupes sold between October 16 and October 23, Vinyard brand pre-cut cantaloupes sold between October 30 and November 10, and ALDI whole cantaloupes and pre-cut fruit products with best-by dates falling between October 27 and October 31.
Consumers who have purchased these recalled fruits are strongly advised to dispose of them immediately. Investigators are actively working to identify any additional cantaloupe products that may be contaminated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Canadian officials are also investigating a parallel outbreak involving the same strain of salmonella found in Malichita brand cantaloupes.
While the reported number of infected individuals stands at 43, health experts caution that the actual figure could be higher, as symptoms of salmonella can take days to manifest. Determining if a case is linked to the outbreak may take three to four weeks. States without currently known infections could also be impacted.
Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with the illness typically lasting four to seven days. It is important to note that salmonella can lead to serious, and occasionally fatal, infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
