During the month of April 2024, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Narcotics Branch seized more than $50 million worth of illicit substances during operations across the country.
According to statistics gathered by the News Room, most of the seized drugs are from two major seizures.
Those operations took place in Police Division 4A, which stretches from Industry to Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara and Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) during the week of April 08 to 15.
During that week, 49 kilograms of cannabis with the street value of $44M and four grams of cocaine, worth $6M were seized.
In Division 4A, 22 kilograms of narcotics were confiscated and another 19 kilograms from Region Six.
Cocaine and cannabis are only two of several types of narcotics. Other categories include heroin, ecstasy, crystal meth and harish.
Overall, statistics gathered by the News Room revealed that from January 1, 2024 to April 15, 2024, 307 kilograms of cannabis, two kilograms of cocaine and 101 ecstasy pills, amounting to 115 grams were seized.
While, 169 acres of cannabis fields were destroyed.
When compared to the same period last year, 89 kilograms more cocaine was seized this year.
Cannabis seizure declined by 296 kilograms while ecstasy dropped by 54 grams.
During these operations, several persons were charged and placed before the courts.
In some instances, particularly during eradication exercises which are conducted mainly farm lands, the suspects managed to escape.
