As of April 15, 2024, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) seized a total of 40 illegal firearms. The seizures included 22 pistols, 10 shotguns and seven revolvers.

The confiscations occurred during the period of January 01 to April 15, 2024 during operations carried out in the 12 policing divisions across the country.

According to statistics gathered by the News Room, the figure reflects a 24 per cent decrease in gun seizure when compared to the same period last year. During this time last year, 53 firearms were seized.

Majority of the seizures took place in Police Division 4A which stretches from Industry to Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

Followed by Police Division Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) where seven guns were confiscated.

Two firearms each were taken away from persons in Police Division One (Barima-Waini) and Police Division Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); the lowest in the country.

While there were no seizures recorded in police divisions 8, 9 and 5.

In January this year, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn said that the police recorded an increase in gun-related crimes.

But despite the situation, Benn noted the ministry will not be conducting a gun amnesty programme.

“The situation about gun crimes and holding and having illegal guns, we are not going to doing any amnesty.

“Those who have guns (illegal) should walk into the nearest police station and give them up or put them somewhere. You are not supposed to have them.

“If you have an illegal gun, pass by the police station, put it in a bag and throw it in the yard,” Benn told reporters.

According to him, the authorities are “thoroughly” against the possession of illegal firearms which is said to be linked to drug and criminal activities.

Subsequently, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said the government is not considering any amnesty for persons who have illegal guns in their possession but it wants to step up enforcement efforts.
