Police Reports Unregistered Truck Crushes Woman to Death on Water Street

A tragic incident unfolded on Water Street, Georgetown, on Monday, April 15, 2024, resulting in the death of pedestrian Doreen Haynes after being crushed by an unregistered motor vehicle (truck). Investigations by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) revealed alarming details surrounding the accident.
According to reports, the unregistered vehicle was traveling south along the eastern drive lane of Water Street near National Hardware when the driver attempted to overtake a stationary motor lorry, identified by registration number GAB 3272. In the course of this maneuver, the rear left portion of the unregistered vehicle collided with pedestrian Doreen Haynes, who was engaged in conversation with the driver of the stationary lorry.
Tragically, Haynes was squeezed between the two vehicles, leading to severe injuries to her body as she was propelled southward and fell onto the road surface. Despite prompt medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Constable Fordyce witnessed the subsequent post-mortem examination conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary. The examination revealed that Haynes’ cause of death was attributed to multiple injuries, including crushed hips, sustained as a result of the motor vehicle accident.
In response to the incident, the driver of the unregistered vehicle was promptly arrested and placed in custody. Notices of intended prosecution were prepared and served accordingly. The body of Doreen Haynes was then released to her relatives for burial.
