The internet went into a frenzy when an ophthalmologist posted a video of her patient having 23 contact lenses underneath her eyelid. The video went viral and has now racked up more than a million views. Dr. Katerina Kurteeva is an ophthalmologist with California Eye Associates.
According to the ophthalmologist’s post, the patient put in a new set of lenses for 23 days in a row without ever taking the previous day out.
Posting the video on the California Eye Associates Instagram page, she wrote: “A rare occasion when someone ‘forgot’ to remove contact lenses at night and kept on putting a new one in every morning. 23 days in a row!!! I got to deliver the contact lens bunch yesterday in my clinic.” The patient apparently kept putting a new contact lens in their eye for 23 days in a row without taking out the others, according to the Instagram post.
Many news media houses have since reposted the video and many social media users asking questions like “wow who leaves contact lenses in their eyes and forgets them there”
Speaking with ABC news Kurteeva said her patient was very lucky that there was no apparent long-lasting damage.
“It doesn’t always end this well. I’ve been in practice for almost 20 years and I’ve seen some cases really go south, where people develop vision-threatening infections… from even like a day of overnight contact lens wearing,” she said.
