The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, marked the commencement of this transformative project.
Key Features of the New Amsterdam Hospital:
Hub-and-Spoke Mechanism: The hospital will operate on a hub-and-spoke mechanism, connecting health centers in the region through telemedicine. This connectivity will ensure access to world-class healthcare services for citizens in remote areas.
Technological Integration: Utilizing telemedicine, the New Amsterdam Hospital will be linked to the main referral hospital in the city, creating a network that extends to Mount Sinai and other major hospitals globally.
Four-Story Building: The hospital, spanning four stories, will house a minimum of five operating theaters, including one dedicated to cardiac surgery. Advanced digital X-ray and CT Scan machines will be incorporated.
MRI Machine and Transplant Facilities: The facility will be equipped with an MRI machine, making it the second public hospital in the country to offer this service. The hospital will also be prepared for transplant procedures.
Additional Buildings: Two additional structures within the hospital compound will include a facility for classes and a modern psychiatric unit.
Construction Timeline: Executed by VAMED Engineering, the project is expected to be completed within 36 months.
President’s Vision and Minister’s Statements:
President Ali highlighted the hospital’s role as a level five facility and emphasized technology’s transformative impact on healthcare delivery. The vision includes creating parity of service through technological advancements.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony underscored the importance of training investments to complement infrastructure development. Plans include increasing the number of doctors at the current New Amsterdam Hospital, constructing a new nursing school in New Amsterdam, and ongoing investments to enhance services at the existing facility.
The new hospital aligns with the government’s broader commitment to healthcare infrastructure development, including the construction of the Skeldon Hospital and new health centers in various regions.
