New Amsterdam man drowns in Canje Creek, not yet found

Police are investigating the alleged drowning of 42-year-old Rayon Captain, known as Chippy.

The self-employed resident of Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Berbice, was last seen on Sunday around 17:15 hrs at the Canje Creek in New Forest, East Canje, Berbice.

According to initial reports, Captain was at the creek with his family, including his reputed wife, Ramrattie Williamson, a 61-year-old housewife.

The family was reportedly celebrating after a wedding and had been drinking alcohol before deciding to take a swim.

The News Room understands that Captain entered the creek after observing another man swim across to the other side and return.

However, after Captain swam to the other side, he did not resurface. Family members and other individuals present at the scene expressed concern and immediately contacted the authorities.

Police Officers from the Reliance Police Station, reportedly arrived at the scene around 18:30 hrs. They conducted a thorough investigation, questioning several witnesses.

The area was also searched for CCTV cameras, though none were found.

The crime scene was processed and photographed by a crime scene technician, who documented the environment, including empty bottles of Jack Daniel’s liquor and cups.

Despite several checks in the creek and surrounding areas, no sign of Captain has been found. The search resumed Monday with the assistance of the Region Six marine boat.

The investigation is ongoing.
