The Ministry of Health is gearing up to launch a sonography or ultrasound training initiative in collaboration with Mohawk College, a reputable Canadian institution. Minister Dr. Frank Anthony made this announcement during a ceremony at the ministry’s headquarters in Georgetown, where ultrasound and digital X-ray machines were handed over to Regions Three, Four, and Five.
The comprehensive training program, set to commence within the next two months under the Health Sciences Education Division, will equip participants with the skills necessary to perform sonography. Upon completion of the training, individuals will receive certification and be deployed to various regional health institutions across the country.
Sonographers, also known as ultrasound technicians, utilize imaging equipment and soundwaves to generate images of different parts of the body. These images are instrumental in aiding doctors to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions. By training technicians in ultrasound procedures, the ministry aims to alleviate the workload of doctors and enhance healthcare delivery efficiency.
Sixteen individuals have already been selected to comprise the inaugural cohort of trainees, hailing from diverse regions across Guyana. This initiative forms part of the government’s overarching strategy to bolster the human resource capacity within the healthcare sector.
In addition to the ultrasound training program, Budget 2024 has allocated $1.4 billion for the construction of two health science training facilities in New Amsterdam and Suddie. These facilities will serve as hubs for recruiting and training individuals in various healthcare professions, including nursing.

Furthermore, plans are underway to train over 1000 registered nurses within the next three years, alongside similar programs for Laboratory Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants, Community Health Workers (CHWs), and Nursing Assistants, among others.
