Minister Collin Croal Commissions Water Supply System in Quarrie Region Nine

Residents of Quarrie, Region Nine, celebrated improved access to water as Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, commissioned the community’s new water supply system. The ceremony, attended by Regional Chairman Mr. Brian Allicock and Mr. Ramchand Jailal, Hinterland Services Director at Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), marked a significant milestone for the community.

Previously reliant on a hand-dug well, Quarrie faced water shortages exacerbated by a prolonged drought. In response to this challenge, GWI, in collaboration with the community, drilled a new well to ensure a sustainable water supply. The newly established system now serves 60% of the community, addressing a critical need for clean and accessible water.

During the commissioning ceremony, Minister Croal announced plans for further improvements, including the drilling of a second well. He emphasized the government’s commitment to investing in water infrastructure, citing an initial investment of $12 million for the first well. Minister Croal also highlighted the importance of climate change awareness, urging residents to conserve water and protect the newly established system.

Under President Irfaan Ali’s leadership, the government has prioritized expanding water access in hinterland and riverine communities nationwide. Over the past three years, $3 billion has been allocated to improve water access, with significant progress noted in Region Nine. Access to water in the region has increased from 60% in 2020 to 94% presently. Additionally, $1.5 billion has been allocated for the Hinterland Water Supply Programme this year, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing water infrastructure in remote communities.
