The Government of Guyana is set to implement significant infrastructure upgrades in Georgetown, with a primary focus on Carifesta Avenue and several other key thoroughfares. These improvements are part of the ongoing transformative agenda aimed at enhancing the country’s infrastructure in 2024.
In February 2023, the Ministry of Public Works initiated the tendering process for the Rehabilitation and Upgrade of Carifesta Avenue (Phase 1). The contract for this phase was successfully awarded in December 2023. The scope of Phase 1 includes the construction of concrete drains on the northern side of Carifesta Avenue and the expansion of the existing single-lane northern carriageway to accommodate two lanes. This phase prioritizes the northern side due to the extensive civil works required on the southern side. The northern side will be converted into a double lane during the construction period, incorporating revetment and widening works to include an additional westbound lane.
Additionally, major upgrades are planned for Homestretch Avenue, expanding it to four lanes. A contract for this phase has already been signed. Thomas Lands, another vital thoroughfare, will undergo rehabilitation to provide a crucial link from east to west. Geometric improvements will be implemented on Vlissengen Road to facilitate turning lanes. Lamaha Street, from Vlissengen Road to Sheriff Street, is set to be widened and upgraded, along with Conversation Tree (to four lanes), with completion expected in the first quarter of 2024.
Road widening projects are also underway on Aubrey Barker Road and Cemetery Road to accommodate four lanes. Despite delays, progress is being made.
This comprehensive infrastructure development reflects the government’s commitment to creating a modern and efficient urban landscape in Georgetown and throughout Guyana. The People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government is dedicated to improving the lives and livelihoods of all Guyanese.
