A powerful windstorm hit Karasabai Village in Region Nine on Sunday afternoon, injuring three residents and leaving significant destruction in its wake.
The Village’s Toshao David Albert told the News Room that the government has committed to rebuilding efforts. The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has already delivered emergency hampers to affected residents.
“A zinc fly and cut a girl on her leg, somebody got a broken nose and a piece of wood fall on a pregnant lady,” Albert stated.
The storm, described by Toshao Albert as having the strength of a cyclone, lasted about five minutes. He said this was the first time something like this has happened in the village.
“It damaged four houses completely and the other 18 houses the wall fall down and some of the roof come off, some completely, some partial,” the Toshao explained.
Many of the damaged homes belonged to students from remote villages attending Karasabai Secondary School.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai on Monday met with affected residents.
As rebuilding efforts are underway, affected residents are staying with relatives.
