Table of Contents
The hinterland regions of Guyana are currently facing a challenging situation with a prolonged dry period, resulting in significant water supply issues for residents. Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has stepped up its efforts to tackle these challenges and ensure that communities have access to clean and reliable water sources.
According to GWI, areas such as regions 1, 7, 8, and 9, along with other riverine zones, have been particularly affected by the dry spell. The company has noted a depletion in surface water sources and a reduction in production from several wells, prompting urgent interventions.
To address the reduced pumping hours and alleviate water shortages, GWI has initiated extended sectional delivery to numerous affected areas. Additionally, emergency measures have been put in place to provide relief to impacted customers.
In the Moruca Sub-District, where the central water source has been depleted, GWI has drilled a new well on Santa Rosa Islands. The successful completion of this drilling operation is a significant step towards alleviating water shortages in the area. Efforts are now underway to interconnect the new well with the existing water supply system.
Similarly, in the Mabaruma Sub-District, a new well has been drilled in the Mabaruma settlement to address water scarcity. This well is currently undergoing activation and integration into the water distribution network. GWI is also exploring the possibility of drilling additional wells and tapping into alternative water sources to bolster supply.
In Matthew’s Ridge, adjustments to sectional delivery and expansion of the water system infrastructure are underway to enhance service delivery to the community. These measures aim to ensure that residents have access to reliable water resources despite the challenges posed by the dry period.
Recognizing the pressing need for increased water availability, GWI is actively drilling additional wells in regions 7, 8, and 9. The company is also collaborating closely with local communities to address water shortages and provide essential relief measures.
Efforts are also underway in the Pomeroon region, where new wells are being drilled to serve as vital sources of potable water for affected communities. Recently completed wells in Hackney and Friendship are currently being interconnected with newly established water supply systems, further bolstering water accessibility in these areas.
Guyana Water Incorporated remains committed to implementing strategic measures to alleviate the impact of the prolonged dry period on hinterland communities. Through these efforts, GWI aims to ensure that all residents have access to clean and reliable water resources, even during challenging times.
