Following the successful Guyana Tennis Association’s (GTA) Novice tournament, focus switches to the Doubles Championship- the first exclusive Doubles tournament in four years.
Teams will be competing in five categories: Men’s Open Doubles, Ladies’ Open Doubles, Mixed Open Doubles, Men’s 35 and Over Doubles, and the Novice Medley Doubles.
Main-draw and round-robin action will kick off on Saturday, June 1 at 17:30h, and continue through Sunday, June 16.
Key storylines:
All eyes are on the reigning Men’s Doubles champions, Leyland Leacock and Gavin Lewis. The pair will look to maintain their unbeaten streak after winning the 2022 GBTI Men’s Open Doubles.
Former Men’s Doubles champions, Sandeep Chand and Andre Lopes are making a highly anticipated return to competitive doubles action after a four-year hiatus.
Chand and Lopes were winners of the 2011 Trophy Stall Doubles tournament, and the GBTI Men’s 35 and Over Doubles in 2017.
The reigning Rebel Tennis Club Open Men’s champion, Gerald Scotland and former national player Wayne Barker are pairing. This is the team’s first tournament together.
Barker was also a finalist at the Rebel Tennis Club Championships earlier this year.
The current One Guyana Men’s 35 and Over champion, Phillip Squires is set to return to doubles action with Seanden David-Longe, who impressed with his semi-final finish at the prestigious GTA One Guyana Open last year.
Kizzy Richmond is seeking her second Mixed Doubles title with partner Leyland Leacock. The team paired up to win the GBTI Mixed Open Doubles in 2022.
Reigning Beginner Novice champions, Tisel Patterson and Osafa Dos Santos are looking to translate that winning momentum from singles to doubles.
Patterson is paired with Kelly Whitehead, while Dos Santos is partnered with Patrice Stewart in the Novice Medley Doubles action.
The GTA Doubles Championship is a product of the GTA’s extensive partnership with the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and by extension the Government of Guyana.
