The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) routinely conducts the verification of measuring instruments and equipment, be it speed guns, breathalyser kits or tank gauges, and the body has been developing local capacity to verify tint and sound level meters.
“There are some new areas- the tint meter and the sound level meter- that we are currently working on developing capacity to do verification for,” the Bureau’s Head of Legal Metrology, Shailandra Rai told reporters on Monday.
In March 2023, the GNBS Head of Industrial Metrology and Testing Department, Donna Canterbury said the bureau is working to ensure it possesses the capability to verify sound meters, tint meters and LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) meters.

It was expected that the in-house capacity would be developed sometime last year.
Rai, however, noted that the GNBS is still acquiring the equipment needed to verify the instruments used by Police Officers and other stakeholders to measure tint and sound levels.
Once the equipment is acquired, he said GNBS will undergo the necessary training. Then the services would be provided. Rai said these services could be rolled out “early next year.”
Verification services are a key part of the work done by the GNBS.
Already, the body developed capacity to conduct the much-needed verification of police speed guns and breathalyser kits.
