In a compassionate gesture just before the Easter holidays, Food for the Poor (Guyana) Incorporated (FFTP) orchestrated the release of an inmate who had been incarcerated due to his inability to pay a nominal fine. The organization stepped in to settle the fine, allowing the non-violent offender to return home to his loved ones.
At a modest ceremony held on Friday, Ms. Andrea Benjamin, Chief Executive Officer of Food for the Poor (Guyana) Incorporated, personally informed the prisoner of his impending release. She emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity for a fresh start and urged him to make positive changes in his life.
“We all make mistakes, and we all deserve a second chance. Food for the Poor is here to grant you that second chance by paying the fine to ensure that you spend Easter, and every day thereafter, with your families and friends,” Ms. Benjamin expressed.
Kevin Pilgrim, Acting Deputy Director of Prisons, also addressed the inmate, offering words of encouragement and gratitude to FFTP for their unwavering support in initiatives aimed at inmate rehabilitation.
Following the ceremony, the inmate received a package of essential items including food hampers containing bread, clothing, personal care items, and a Bible. Additionally, cash assistance for transportation was provided to facilitate his return home.
The prison releases initiative, organized by FFTP, is conducted biannually during Easter and Christmas. Through their Prison Ministry Programme, FFTP has been instrumental in not only securing the release of non-violent inmates but also providing them with training and support for successful reintegration into society as productive citizens.
