Govindra Swambeer, a 38-year-old fisherman from Whim Corentyne, Berbice, found himself in legal trouble after being arrested and charged with possession of a firearm without a license and unlawful possession of ammunition without a license.
The arrest occurred on March 27, and Swambeer was brought before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face the charges. Upon hearing the charges read to him, Swambeer pleaded guilty.
Following his guilty plea, Swambeer was sentenced to fifteen months’ imprisonment for each of the charges. The charges stemmed from Swambeer’s possession of two single-barrel 12-gauge shotguns, lacking serial numbers, along with five cartridges.
The case underscores the seriousness with which firearm-related offenses are treated by the legal system, highlighting the consequences individuals may face for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
