Disciplinary actions for unethical Prison Officer

Following the circulation of a video, the Guyana Prison Service has confirmed that prison officer Marvin DeSouza will face disciplinary actions for unethical behaviour while operating one of the service minibus on the roadway.

The video, which was captured by a citizen was circulated on social media site – Facebook.

In a press statement, the GPS said the acting officer-in-charge of the Lusignan Prison, Kofi David, has been instructed to ensure “prompt” disciplinary actions are taken against DeSouza.

According to the statement, investigations revealed that Cadet Officer Keon David, who held command responsibility for the vehicle, “failed to exercise adequate control and oversight”.

So, the GFS said disciplinary proceedings will also be initiated against him.

Director of Prison (ag) Nicklon Elliot, in the statement, described the incident as regrettable.

He emphasised that the GPS is committed to fostering public trust by ensuring all officers perform their duties with professionalism and accountability.

“The Guyana Prison Service expects all its officers to act with the utmost integrity and professionalism in carrying out their responsibilities. Misconduct of any kind undermines the trust placed in us by the public and will not be tolerated,” Elliot said in the said.

Additionally, the Prison Service reiterates its commitment to upholding its values and ensuring that all personnel adhere to the highest ethical standards in service to the nation.
