On Sunday, April 14, 2024, at approximately 5:49 hrs, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) experienced a transmission line trip at its Kingston facility. Preliminary investigations revealed that a guy-wire had burst and made contact with the L5 Transmission line, which was transmitting approximately 15 Megawatts (MWs) of generation at the time.
The sudden loss of generation triggered a ripple effect on the grid, leading to multiple generating units going offline. Consequently, customers in both Demerara and Berbice experienced disruptions in their power supply.
Immediately following the incident, GPL’s restoration team sprang into action to rectify the issue. By 6:13 hrs, the first area in Demerara was repowered, and incremental restoration efforts continued until remedial work on the L5 Transmission Line was completed. By 7:34 hrs, power had been restored to all affected areas.
Acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the unplanned service interruptions, GPL reaffirmed its commitment to diligently addressing such occurrences. The company emphasized its ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability of the power supply and minimize disruptions for its customers.
