Lakewood, Colorado – February 20, 2024 – The tragic death of Christopher Ward, a 34-year-old resident of Lakewood, Colorado, has brought attention to the dangers of owning exotic pets. Ward passed away on Friday, February 16, after being bitten by one of his pet Gila monsters.
Ward was rushed to the hospital on February 12th shortly after being bitten, where he was placed on life support. Despite efforts to save him, Ward succumbed to his injuries, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Authorities are working to determine whether Ward’s death was caused by the venom of the Gila monster or if other medical factors were involved. The Jefferson County coroner’s office is currently conducting tests to ascertain the exact cause of death.
According to reports, Ward’s girlfriend discovered him with one of their pet Gila monsters, named Winston, latched onto his hand, after hearing unusual sounds from a nearby room. Ward began exhibiting symptoms soon after, including vomiting and loss of consciousness.
The couple had acquired Winston and another Gila monster named Potato from different sources, despite Gila monsters being illegal to own in Lakewood. Following Ward’s death, the lizards were surrendered to animal control officers.
Gila monsters are known for their venomous bites, which can cause severe pain and unconsciousness. While fatalities from Gila monster bites are rare, Ward’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with keeping exotic pets.
